10 Ways to Become a GREEN Homeowner

It is up to each individual to do their part to help save our planet no matter how small an impact, if we all get on board we'll have a huge impact on energy efficiency.
Its easier and less expensive to go green than most homeowners may think. Here are a few simple and cost effective tips you can incorporate into everyday living for more energy efficient living.

1. RECYCLE - It's free, reduces household consumption and increases energy efficiency.
2. SAVE WATER - Install low-flow shower heads and faucets, cut down on shower time, and be aware of how much you let the faucet run during everyday tasks.
3. CONSERVE RAIN WATER - Set up barrels in your backyard to collect water and use watering plants and shrubs. You can use this for indoor plants too.
4. REDUCE ELECTRICITY - Remember to turn off the light when you leave the room, unplug electronics and appliances when not in use.
5. REPLACE LIGHT BULBS - Change your current light bulbs to compact, fluorescent lighting. These bulbs use 30% less energy, produce the same amount of light and last longer.
6. Drive Less - Walk when ever you can, share rides, plan multi-task trips; think about trading for a more fuel efficient vehicle.

7. DOUBLE UP ON PRINTING - Configure your computer to print on both sides of the paper. This saves paper, trees and you running to the store for more supplies.
8. ADJUST TEMPERATURES - Adjust your fridge temperature to 37 degrees F and your freezer to 0 degrees F; adjust you thermostat a few degrees lower or higher, according to the season; turn down the temperature on you electric water heater and make sure it is insulated as well.
9. SUPPORT LOCAL FARMS - You will be cutting back on gas and decreasing our dependence on oil with the trucks used to ship produce.
10. DRY CLOTHES OUTSIDE - Hang your clothes outside and get that fresh smell. You'll be reducing the amount of energy you use at home.
